When people talk about the UK’s youth employment crisis, they often focus on statistics.
More than one million young people not in education, employment, or training.
Rising school exclusions.
Growing mental health concerns.
Skills shortages.
Disengagement.
But behind every statistic is a person.

And sometimes the best solutions don’t begin in government buildings, policy papers, or boardrooms.
Sometimes they begin on a residential street with two young people, a pressure washer, a bin cleaning system, and a determination to make a difference.
That is exactly what happened recently when Cameron and Aaron spent the day out in the community as part of Clean Futures, helping local residents through bin cleaning and driveway cleaning services.
To some, it may have looked like a simple cleaning job.
To us, it represents something much bigger.
It represents the future.
The NEET Crisis Requires Different Thinking
The recent Milburn Review highlighted the scale of the challenge facing young people across the UK.
The review recognised that too many young people are becoming disconnected from education, employment, and training and called for stronger partnerships between communities, employers, education providers, and support organisations.
Importantly, it highlighted the need for practical pathways, trusted relationships, and opportunities that help young people build confidence and gain real-world experience.
At Genuine Futures and Clean Futures, we couldn’t agree more.
For years, young people have been told what they need.
Far fewer have been asked what would actually help.
Our experience over the last 26 years has shown us that the answer is often much simpler than people think.

Clean Futures is a youth-led social enterprise designed to tackle some of the root causes of youth disengagement.

They are helping create opportunities for young people.

Clean Futures has grown from the success of the Clean Start Initiative, supported through funding from the The National Lottery Community Fund.
The wider work of Genuine Futures has also been recognised nationally through a five-year partnership with the Co-op Foundation Future Communities Fund.
